Nashua takes its name from its river, a word said to mean beautiful stream with a pebbly bottom, and the city grew up where that river meets the Merrimack. Mills built the place, the mills left, and newer industries moved into the space they emptied. People call it the Gate City for its reputation as a travel gateway between the Boston region and New Hampshire. Trade clusters downtown on Main Street, out Amherst Street and along Daniel Webster Highway in South Nashua. Small service businesses work in the gaps between those bigger names, and when they get busy the books slide by a month, then by six. Catching them up is ordinary work for me.
The Nashua River roughly cuts the city in two, Salmon Brook drains part of it and Pennichuck Brook marks the northern boundary. The Everett Turnpike is the major highway, and Hollis Street crosses the Merrimack into Hudson on the Taylor Falls bridges. Locals know French Hill, which called itself Nashville during the years the town was split, as well as the Tree Streets, Mine Falls Park and Greeley Park.
