What does a bookkeeper cost?
Published market prices, what moves a quote up or down and how to get a real number for your business.
The short answer
Low-volume monthly bookkeeping plans cost $150 to $399 a month: the published range from national online providers (Oct 2026). The nearest New Hampshire firm that publishes a price lists $350 a month for up to 75 transactions, one bank and one card account. What drives your price
Four things that move a bookkeeping quote

Transactions each month
Every sale, payout and purchase is a line to match. A few dozen a month is a different job from several hundred.

Accounts to reconcile
Each bank account, credit card and payment app is reconciled separately, so more accounts mean more work.

Months behind
Current books need upkeep. Books that are months behind need a one-time catch-up first, priced on its own.

Helpers you pay
Paying helpers or subcontractors adds tracking, and a 1099 to prepare for anyone paid over the year's threshold.
Is it worth it?

Cost questions
Questions about bookkeeping cost
How much does a bookkeeper cost?
It depends on how many transactions and accounts you have and whether your books are current. For context, low-volume monthly plans cost $150 to $399 a month: the published range from national online providers (Oct 2026). Those are other providers' prices, not mine. I quote after a free look at your statements, so the number fits your actual business.
Why don't you list prices?
Because the same price would be too high for one business and too low for another. I quote after a free look at your statements, and the consult that comes before it is free.
Is a cleanup priced differently from monthly bookkeeping?
Yes. A cleanup or catch-up is a one-time project priced on how far behind the books are and how many accounts need work. Monthly bookkeeping is ongoing and priced on your usual monthly volume.
Is it cheaper to do the books myself?
In dollars, often yes. In hours, usually not. The calculator above puts your own time next to market rates, so you can decide what your evenings are worth. Some owners split the difference with QuickBooks Online Support and keep doing their own entries.
What does a free consult cost me?
Nothing. I don't charge for consultations, and you are under no obligation afterward.
