Danville used to be called Hawke. It was the westerly part of old Kingstown until its families, tired of the long trip to the meeting house, built one of their own and won a separate town. The name changed at an 1836 town meeting, and nobody has turned up a firm explanation why. What history does record is how people here earned a living: farming first, with sawmills, cooperages, blacksmithing and small home shoe shops bringing in extra income. Side work beside the main work is still how plenty of small businesses begin. It is also how books fall behind, and catching them up is something I do often.

The Old Meeting House, built in 1755, is the landmark that goes back to the town's start. Main Street carries NH 111A north toward Fremont, past the Baptist church that stands beside Town Hall, while NH 111 cuts across the southern end between Hampstead and Kingston. Rock Rimmon Hill rises on the eastern border, and Sandown lies to the west. Children start at Danville Elementary School and go on through the Timberlane Regional schools. Atkinson lies roughly seven miles south of Danville, on the far side of Hampstead.
