Auburn takes its name from a poem. Oliver Goldsmith called his Auburn the loveliest village of the plain, and in 1845 a place that had gone by Chester Woods, Chester West Parish and Long Meadow took the name for its new town. The town still gathers around small things: the Duck Race on Hooksett Road, where thousands of yellow rubber ducks float down the brook, and the library book sale at the Auburn Village School in July. The railroad that once came through found few industries here to serve, and the businesses in a town like this are mostly run from a house. That is where personal money and business money start sharing one account, and where I am most useful.

Massabesic Lake fills the western side of town and supplies Manchester's water, so no swimming is allowed, though sailboats race three laps around it every Sunday. The Massabesic Audubon Center is on Battery Point. Route 101 crosses the north, the Route 28 Bypass runs down the west side toward Derry, and Route 121 goes through the center on its way east to Chester. That same Route 121 is Main Street in my town. Students go to Auburn Village School and then to Pinkerton Academy. Atkinson is about 15 miles to the southeast.

Yes. Auburn and Atkinson are both in Rockingham County and both on Route 121, and a small business anywhere in this stretch of southern New Hampshire is one I can take on. Being in different towns changes nothing practical. Your books sit in an online file, and I work in it from my own desk.

I have been paying business and household bills from one account. Can that be untangled?

Yes, and it is fixable more often than people fear. In a cleanup I go through the account line by line and mark each item as business or personal. Then I record what the business owes you, or what you owe the business, and reconcile everything. After that, a separate account for the Auburn business keeps the two apart.

I rent a chair at a salon and live in Auburn. Is a bookkeeper overkill for me?
