Lawrence did not grow by accident. The Essex Company planned it around the Great Stone Dam, dug a power canal on each bank of the Merrimack and built mills to suit, and the city took its name from Abbott Lawrence, one of the men behind the venture. Generations of newcomers followed the work, which is how the place came to be nicknamed the Immigrant City. The wool trade is long gone, and mill buildings along the river have been turned toward commercial, residential and education uses. People are still starting things here. If you run a small business in Lawrence, I keep its books in order so the effort you put in shows up in the numbers.

Essex Street is the city's historic shopping street. Every Labor Day weekend the Feast of the Three Saints fills Common Street, with a procession that first walked in 1923, and Semana Hispana brings its own week of celebration. Tower Hill rises in the northwest corner and Prospect Hill in the northeast, South Lawrence sits on the other bank, and four road bridges tie the halves together. Robert Frost spent his early school years here. Atkinson is roughly ten miles north of Lawrence, beyond Methuen and the state border.

Where I work

How local and remote work runs

A shop on Essex Street does not need its bookkeeper on the same block. Invite me into QuickBooks Online as your accountant user and send the statements, and I do the monthly work from Atkinson. Calls and video chats cover the rest, whether you are near Tower Hill or over in South Lawrence.

Lawrence questions

Bookkeeping questions from Lawrence

Will a New Hampshire bookkeeper work with a business in Lawrence, MA?

Yes. Keeping books is the same job in Massachusetts as in New Hampshire, because a reconciled account is a reconciled account. State tax returns are a separate matter, and those belong with your Massachusetts tax preparer. My role for a Lawrence business is handing that person records they do not have to untangle.

Why pick a nearby bookkeeper over a big online bookkeeping company?

It comes down to what you want from the relationship. A national service assigns a team and a ticket queue. With me a Lawrence owner gets one person, working from Atkinson, who works in this stretch of the Merrimack Valley, answers your questions herself and puts your reports into everyday words.

What exactly is covered in monthly bookkeeping?

Four things, every month. Each transaction gets a category. Payouts from payment apps are matched to the sales behind them. Every bank and card account is reconciled, which is the step that makes the numbers worth trusting. Then you receive your profit and loss for the month, with the balance sheet beside it.

How much time should a Lawrence business expect a QuickBooks cleanup to take?

That depends on two things: how many months are behind and how many accounts need reconciling. A couple of months on a single account is a short project. A full year spread over several accounts is a longer one. I look at the file for free, then give you a quote and a realistic timeline.
