When the northern boundary of Massachusetts was fixed, most of its north parish landed on the other side and became Salem. The city that remained grew up on the Spicket River, first with cotton mills at the falls and then with small hat and shoe factories around Broadway and Pleasant Street. Three families, the Nevins, the Tenneys and the Searles, left their mark on much of what stands downtown.
