Your bookkeeper in Exeter

Exeter sits at the spot where the Exeter River turns into the tidal Squamscott, and people have been doing business at that spot since John Wheelwright bought the land in 1638. The Gilman family worked as lumbermen, shipbuilders and merchants. Later came cotton textiles, and shops turning out shoes, saddles, harnesses, carriages and bicycles. Starting in 1775 the town served as New Hampshire's capital for fourteen years. Making and selling things is an old habit in Exeter, and the present-day version is the storefront, the studio and the tradesperson with a truck. Those owners take card payments all day or drive all week. Both leave a paper trail that is easy to lose. I keep it.

Routes 27, 85, 108, 111 and 111A all come together in the center of town, and Route 101 has four Exeter exits. Swasey Parkway runs beside the Squamscott where wharves and warehouses once stood, and the Ioka Theatre on Water Street dates to 1915. Phillips Exeter Academy has been here since 1781. The Amtrak Downeaster stops in town on its way between Boston and Portland. Stratham is to the east, Brentwood to the west, and Kingston and East Kingston to the southwest. Atkinson is about 15 miles to the southwest as well.

Where I work

How local and remote work runs

If your Exeter shop takes cards, the raw material for the books is online before I ever see it. You grant access to QuickBooks Online, I match the payouts and reconcile the accounts from Atkinson, and a phone or video call covers anything that needs explaining. A very small business can use a Google Sheet instead.

Exeter questions

Bookkeeping questions from Exeter

Will you take on a small business in Exeter, NH?

Yes. I am in Atkinson, elsewhere in Rockingham County, and I work with small businesses throughout this part of the state. An Exeter owner does not need to come to me, and I do not need to come to you. The books are kept in a shared online file, and that is where you and I meet.

How should an Exeter owner keep track of miles on a work truck?

Write each business trip down when it happens, and always include the date. Dates matter more than usual, because the IRS standard mileage rate changed during 2026 and each trip takes the rate in force that day. Whether your truck is better off on the standard rate or on actual costs is a decision for your tax preparer, not for me.

My Exeter business is tiny. Does paying a bookkeeper even make sense?

Maybe not a monthly one, and I will say so. With a few regular customers and one bank account, a Google Sheet built for you can track all of it with much less effort than accounting software. If you later add helpers or more ways to get paid, that is the point where monthly bookkeeping starts earning its place.

Is Square going to mail me a 1099-K this year?

Only if your sales through it pass the federal reporting lines for 2026, and there are two of them to pass, not one. Your tax preparer can tell you the current figures. Form or no form, every payment an Exeter shop takes is income. I record all of it, so your books agree with whatever Square reports.
