Your bookkeeper in Amesbury

Amesbury made things for a very long time. Mills went up at the falls of the Powwow River, shipbuilders worked along the Merrimack, and from around 1800 the town built carriages, a trade that later evolved into making automobile bodies. The Merrimac Hat Company became one of the top hat producers in the nation. Most of that industry is history, and Amesbury is largely residential today, with Federal and Victorian buildings still standing. A town like that tends to fill with small businesses, and each of them needs what the old firms had: someone watching the ledger. That is the work I offer Amesbury owners, along with reports explained in plain language.

The Powwow runs through the middle of town, passing Lake Gardner and Tuxbury Pond, and Powwow Hill gives views toward Maine and Cape Ann. Interstate 495 ends just over the Salisbury line, where it meets Interstate 95. The Chain Bridge reaches from Deer Island across to Newburyport, the rival in the Thanksgiving Day football game. The Doughboy has stood on the middle school lawn since 1929. Newton, New Hampshire, was once part of Amesbury, and Atkinson is farther along the same heading, close to eleven miles west of Amesbury.

Where I work

How local and remote work runs

Amesbury owners do not have to follow the river inland to hand over paperwork. Your bank feeds flow into QuickBooks Online, I work there as the accountant user you invited, and you can open the same file at any hour. When a report needs explaining, I go through it with you over the phone or a video call.

Amesbury questions

Bookkeeping questions from Amesbury

Can you keep the books for an Amesbury, Massachusetts business from New Hampshire?

Yes. The bookkeeping does not change at the border. I categorize, reconcile and report the same way for a business in Amesbury as for one in my own town. Filing Massachusetts taxes is a different job and it belongs to your tax preparer there, who gets clean books to work from.

Will you go over my reports with me, or just send them?

I go over them with you. Helping an owner understand what the numbers mean is the whole purpose of the reporting service, not an extra. You will see what came in, what went out and what changed since last month, and I stay with a question until the answer makes sense to you.

My bank wants statements for a loan. Can you put them together?

Yes. A lender will usually ask for two things, the profit and loss statement and the balance sheet, and both need to rest on reconciled books to mean anything. I prepare the pair and then go through them with you, so that when the loan officer asks a question, you are the one who answers it.

Could you teach me QuickBooks Online instead of taking it over?

Yes. The lessons happen in your own Amesbury file, so everything you learn applies to your real books right away. I cover the steps you need, starting with bank rules, moving through reconciliations and ending with the reports worth checking each month.
