Who I help · Salons

Bookkeeping for salons and booth renters

Square payouts, booth rent, product sales and tips, each in its own place.

What owners tell me

Where a salon's books get tangled

Whether you own the salon or rent the chair, the money moves in small pieces. Square pays out in batches, booth rent goes in or out every week, product sales and tips land in the same deposits, and taxes feel like a separate language. Stylists I talk to want one thing: to know what they really made, and to stop dreading the tax conversation.

Owner voice from public forums, not a client review

  • “freaking out... where do I pay quarterly taxes? The IRS website? My state website?”

  • “15 years and i still don't understand one single thing about taxes”

Tangled books vs untangled books

After close, a stylist sits sideways in her own salon chair with a mug under a single pendant lamp.
A stylist reaches across a cluttered station tangled with dryer cords, combs, shears and a coffee cup.

Tangled

Untangled

  • Tangled: Square payouts that never match the appointment book

Untangled: Services, products, tips and fees recorded separately

  • Tangled: Booth rent paid or collected with no clear record

Untangled: Booth rent tracked every week

  • Tangled: Products bought on a personal card

Untangled: Supplies and products categorized for tax time

  • Tangled: No idea what to set aside for taxes

Untangled: A monthly report that shows your real profit

How I help a salon or booth renter

In the free consult I show you what each Square payout really contains.

  2. Build the right setup

A custom Google Sheet for a single chair, or QuickBooks Online for a salon with staff.

  3. Explain the numbers

Each month you see what you made, so your tax preparer and you are working from the same page.

Salon and booth rental bookkeeping questions

How do I record Square payouts for my salon?

Split each payout into its parts: service income, product sales, tips and Square's fee, then match the net deposit to your bank. Recording the gross amounts is what makes your income match what Square reports. I set this up once and it stays consistent.

I rent a booth. Do I need a bookkeeper?

Many booth renters do well with a custom Google Sheet that tracks services, products, booth rent and supplies. It takes minutes a week and hands your tax preparer a clean year. If you grow into a salon with staff, QuickBooks Online is the next step.

Will Square send me a 1099-K?

For 2026 a payment processor sends a 1099-K once you pass more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions in the year. Every payment is income either way, so I record them all and your books match what Square reports.

Can you tell me how much to set aside for quarterly taxes?

Your tax preparer sets that number. What I give you is the piece they need to set it well: clean, current income and expense totals every month. Owners who see those numbers monthly stop dreading the quarterly question.
