Bookkeeping for dog walkers and pet sitters
Rover, Time To Pet and Venmo payouts that finally match, and every mile counted.
What owners tell me
Where a pet care business's books get tangled
Pet care money arrives from everywhere. Rover pays out after its fee, private clients send Venmo or Zelle, and some pay cash at the door. Then there is the driving: every walk and drop-in is a trip, and the mileage rules feel different depending on who you ask. Pet sitters I talk to are usually great with animals and tired of guessing at their own numbers.
Owner voice from public forums, not a client review
“all cash and Venmo/Paypal payments. How do you even log that?”
A pet-sitting business owner's spouse, r/TaxQuestions, August 2026 “getting such mixed messages... One CPA said I could deduct... One cpa said I could not”
A pet sitter, r/petsitting, February 2025 “Most of my private clients pay through venmo or zelle... Do I need some software for this? Or simple Google do[cs]”
A dog walker and pet sitter, r/petsitting, March 2024
Tangled books vs untangled books

Tangled
Untangled
Tangled: Rover deposits that never match your bookings
Untangled: Gross bookings, platform fees and deposits all recorded
Tangled: Venmo and cash from private clients, untracked
Untangled: Every private payment logged as income
Tangled: Mileage guessed at in April
Untangled: A mileage log kept as you go, at the right rate
Tangled: No idea what you actually take home per visit
Untangled: A monthly report that shows real profit

Pet care bookkeeping questions
How do I record Rover payouts?
Record what the client paid as income, record Rover's fee as an expense, and match the net deposit to your bank. The deposit is smaller than the bookings because the fee comes out first. Recording both sides is what makes your income match what Rover reports.
What is the 2026 mileage rate for dog walkers?
For the 2026 tax year the IRS standard rate is 72.5 cents per business mile from January 1 to June 30, 2026, and 76 cents per mile from July 1 to December 31, 2026. Trips before and after July use different rates, so a log with dates matters. Which trips count is a question for your tax preparer, and I keep the log that answers it.

Will Rover or Venmo send me a 1099-K?
For 2026 a payment app sends a 1099-K once you pass more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions in the year. Income below that line is still taxable, so I record every payout whether a form arrives or not.

Is a spreadsheet enough for a one-person pet sitting business?
Often, yes. A custom Google Sheet can track client payments, Rover payouts and mileage in one place for a solo sitter. When you add walkers or more apps, QuickBooks Online is the next step, and the sheet makes that move easy.
