Lowell was laid out as a planned textile center beside the rapids of the Merrimack River, and it is still known as the cradle of the American Industrial Revolution. The mills stopped weaving long ago, but the buildings found new work. Western Avenue Studios turned one of them into a home for working artists and musicians, and the old mill district, canal paths and all, is preserved as Lowell National Historical Park. A city that reuses its mills this well draws people who work for themselves: makers, musicians, shop owners and service crews from the Acre to Belvidere. The Merrimack and the Concord meet here, and Pawtucket Falls is a mile-long run of rapids on the Merrimack. Eight neighborhoods make up the city, among them Centralville, Pawtucketville, the Highlands and Back Central, and Interstate 495, Route 3 and the Lowell Connector tie them to everything around. UMass Lowell spreads over three campuses, and the Lowell Folk Festival fills three free days at the end of each July. Dracut, Tewksbury, Billerica, Chelmsford and Tyngsborough ring the city. Atkinson, New Hampshire, where I work, is roughly 16 miles northeast of the city, a distance that means nothing to a file kept online.
